You know...it is interesting to think how far development would have gone if FORD didn't bring MERCURY back into it's fold in 1960/61.
Had MERCURY been allowed to go it's own way as it had since 1957, you might have seen all kinds of performance developments for the MEL to counter FORD's FE.
You got the message when FORD (HOLMAN-MOODY) dropped MEL development in 1959 and went to the FE in 1960. FORD started (end of racing ban) participating again and was only concerned with the FE as it would be the main powerplant for FORD-MERC for the sixties.
