I have often read that the two block thermostats (behind the water pump) should be removed and not be replaced. If memory serves right they were a piece of unsuccessful over-engineering and were dropped in '63.

Hi reijer, the thermostats of my MEL rebuild project were hopelessly rusted. I think that rust and the lack of spare parts is the main reason for people to dump them and run their engines w/o them.
The idea behind this system and the construction is O.K. I think. Otherwise the engineers wouldn't have taken the risk to use it in their top of the line engines and cars.

They were discontinued from service in the mid-sixties.

I thought someone installed the block thermostats in my 1958 backwards, but then I found this bulletin indicating the factory made a change in 1958 and flipped them around. An interesting fact if you have a 1958 but obsolete.

58-Pagoda,
I've split your contributions into several themes and partly moved them into different section. They are of great value, thanx so much for your good work.
