430 and 462 Stroker Crank- brand new

Post by fourtwoseven » Thu 10. Jul 2014, 07:51

Calling all 430 and 462 owners who want a bit more umpf in your ride...I have a brand new Ford 460 Eagle cast crankshaft, 4.5" stroke, that has been machined to fit a 430-462 MEL block. This makes the 430 into 485 cubes (without any boring) or a 462 into 495 cubes. Boring to 0.030 over adds about 15 cubic inches to each. The crank is currently resting in a 462 block...the crank throws easily clear the block and the cam, and with the Scat H-beams the rods clear the pan rail and bottom of the bore without clearancing!

I have about $550 in the crank and machining...asking $375 plus shipping, which is going to be $55-70 depending on where you are. You can pick up in Indianapolis if you are close. You can email me at sjp@palmaarch.com. I do have photos, just have not put them on my computer yet, will be able to send next week.

This crank will require new rods and pistons...you use 6.7" BBC rods and your piston maker of choice: Diamond, KB, Ross, Arias, J&E, etc. I know Ross & Arias have recently made pistons for the MEL engine, so you will probably get better service from them. I am using Scat 6.7 H-beam rods and Arias pistons. You can either internally balance or use a 460 Ford crank dampner. The crank snout is nice and long for plenty of accessory pulleys. The rear of the crank has been turned to the 430/462 rope seal or you can adapt the 460 rubber seal.

Reason for selling: I have decided to supercharge my 462 stroker engine, and I have ordered a forged crank, which runs about $800 more than the cast. The cast crank should be good for at least 500 HP naturally aspirated, but I would not recommend putting a power adder on it. This is not a project for the novice, but for someone who is into building their 430 or 462, the machining part is done.

2.15 X 2.15 X 3.14 X 4.5 X 8 = 522.52
That is a big engine. TJR

Thanks for all the interest...the crank has been sold. Because I had several email conversations with board members, here are some of the details: when a 460 Ford stroker crank is used in a 430 or 462 MEL block, the mains must be turned to 2.9 from 3.0, and depending on the specific crank manufacturer, the rear seal journal may also have to be turned down slightly to the 430-462 diameter. I also faced the crank output flange 0.01 on the block side of the flange, it is pretty close back there and that provided a little more room. The individual crank manufacturers may or may not include an oil slinger...the older 460 Ford cranks had one. You can use either a rope seal or 2-piece rubber rear main seal with a 460 crank transplant.

I do have one Arias 10:1 aluminum piston for sale (I bought 10) which is set up for a 4.2" stroker crank (the max a stock cast crank can be offset ground). You would use a 6.8" BBC rod with this piston. However, this piston is sized for a 4.41 bore, which is a 462 bored 0.030 over. So for most guys, as they have 430s, this piston would only be for sizing and setup. I paid $1300 for the set of ten (plus freight), would sell one for $130 plus shipping. If interested, just email me at sjp@palmaarch.com. Thanks, Stan
