Early 1958 430 rebuild

Post by RocketdyneF1 » Fri 16. Mar 2018, 14:22

After searching for a good camshaft for a long time, i´ve finally found a good one!
The cam is Falcon Performance #CM-184, a new reproduction of a stock cam, at least they say so. I couldn´t measure its duration, but i measured the valve lift at about 0.440", so its probably a reproduction of the early style stock cam i was looking for.

After I installed the new cam, valve lifters and timing chain, I disassembled both rocker shafts. I guess they´ve never been serviced and the dirty, muddy scab on them was 60 years old.

I cleaned and inspected them, wich was a good thing, because some oil passages were almost full of crap. I also cleaned all 16 pushrods.

I also cleaned and painted the oil pan and refurbished the oil pump with a rebuild kit.

The valve train and oiling system are complete again.

Today I assembled the valley pan, ignition distributor, timing chain cover with fuel pump pushrod, flywheel, valve covers and the Tri Power system. Finally it looks like an engine!

Are there provisions in a 58 Ford to bolt up your early 58 block without the side mount bosses?

Sorry, I dont know that. But a beautiful 58 Ford with this big engine sounds good to me!
Too bad I dont have one. Actually I dont have any car for my MEL engine. When I bought the engine, I planned to by a car for it, but I ran out of money. So I´ll store the engine when its completely rebuildt. Or maybe, if I get a good offer, I might even sell it.

Early 1958 430 rebuild

Today, I finally started up the engine for the first time in years. It only ran for a few seconds, but damn, it has a really loud and brutal sound! No wonder, it has absolutley no exhaust system on it except for the manifolds. I also havent bought a radiator and cooling fan for it yet, so I cant let it run for longer periods of time. I´ll post a video of it running when I am done tuning the carbs and ignition, and the cooling system is complete.

You should let me store it in my pick-up till you find a suitable car.
