430 heads on a 462

I have a 462 that I wanted to put 1958-59 cylinder heads on to better match up to the super marauder intake I have. I know the 430 heads will swap onto the 462 but is this a good idea? I think I should do this so the intake ports match. They are defenately different in width and height. I will have to measure them again and write it down and post it. I hear that the better flow will be good of course but sometimes restricting it a little might help in other fields...not really sure. Any advice if I should keep the 462 heads or swap. I am using the 3x2 no matter what so please do no try to convince me otherwise! I am going for looks but it should preform as well or better than the single dual plane 4. Thanks for the help.

The best choice for the MEL OEM 3 X 2 intake will be the 58/59 heads.

If you plan to use this engine on your 67 LINC, you will have to modify the hood closing.

Are the heads taller??? If not then it will work with air cleaner and all. I have had it mocked up in my parts car already. I cannot imagine the cylinder heads being any taller but if they are then I will have to go hoodless for a while till I raise the hoodline. No biggy. The 66-67 hood has a much larger crown in the center of the hood but it works with the 462 heads. Thanks.

The heads are not physicall taller, but starting in 1961 with the LINC specific redesign of the 430, the intake manifold carb pad was lowered and moved towards the rear of the intake (this is more apparent on the 63/65 4V intake) to fit under the new lowered hoodline. It may be that the 66/ hoodline was increased. I just wanted you to be aware of the possibility.

Do you know how to measure carb pad height and/or is the blue vehicle you are showing in the photo a 66/ LINC?

The car in the photo is a 67. What would I measure the carb pad height from? The carb pads for the tri power are without a doubt higher but with that clunky 4 barrel air cleaner I can see height being a problem but I will be using a 1" or so air cleaner with a flat lid. The Holley 2300s are no taller than the standard 4 barrel. If I used 2Gs or any other carbs it would for sure hit the hood. I will be sticking with the 2300s I have or move to Mopar D neck ones but they are the same. Thanks

the only question I have is that these MEL intakes have a valley pan. I can measure that as you have it pictured but the bottom plane might actually be different on the standard 4bbl and the 3 deuces (maybe different heights?). I do have both easily accessible so I can post both results. Take care.

:| Doh!

You got me on that one.

Yes, use the valley rails as the bottom measurement.

Don't forget to figure the additional length of the FE style air cleaner at the front.

John and Kultulz,
It is great to have the MEL forum back again.
I will be watching carefully for the port sizes, pad heights, and for how John's Hot Rod Lincoln is coming along.
Good to hear it might fit under the 66-67 hood.
If not maybe you could take a spare hood and fiberglass in a boss-429 style scoop or cowl induction setup.
The 1" high filter might not be enough flow, just have to try it when the time comes.
Keep posting!

Below is a photo of a gentlemans 1962 LINC slabside installation. It is an EDELBROCK with ROCHESTER carbs so they do sit higher. You can see the scoop on the hood to allow closure.

John's is the OEM setup with 2300 HOLLEYS. It just may fit.
