1962 Galaxie Starliner engine

Post by lincoln62 » Sun 24. Jan 2010, 11:54

i can vuagly remeber(or spell!!) a 1962 issue of Hot Rod magazine in which Ford or maybe Mickey thompsen for Ford, put a 1961 starliner roof on a 1962 Galaxie. They put a large,472 or so cubic inch engine in it and took it to Bonneville. I can't remember if it was a large (472 or534) ford heavy truck engine, a MEL, or an FE. anyone have an issue of this article, or remember it? thanks.

Here are some details on the 483 CID engine used in the '62 Ford that ran at Bonneville per the Jan 1963 issue of Car Life magazine.

Bore: 4.23"
Stroke: 4.3"
Compression ratio: 12:1
Dual 4 barrel Holley carbs
2.67:1 rear gear ratio

The Galaxie chassis started out as convertible and had a Starliner roof grafted on.
Best speed was 176.978 mph and two way average was 172.26 mph.
46 national and international records were set in Class B.

Big Engines are quick but it's hard to beat the fun that comes from running a normally aspirated Y-Block at 8.80's and 147 mph in the quarter.

I forgot Fred Lorenzen drove it, Hoolman & Moody built it. Man, that is fast for a square 62 ford!
