What was referred to as older 430's was true... Those are 430H's which used the older cooling system with just the twin impellor raw water pump, and no circulating pump. On the big Chris Craft cruisers that used the 430, they had some issues with keeping the engines cool, so they upped the water flowing through the system.

The "older" picture also features a paragon transmission HJAC, which was a hydraulic forward AND reverse. The HJ7 which was used in the smaller boats and later installs was a band reverse. This allowed about 15% power transfer in reverse, which was fine for the smaller boats, but they figured that the larger boats needed a hydraulic reverse. The HJAC transmission was only used for a couple of years... it was bulky, heavy, and expensive to build. I had a couple of them, and traded them for a couple of HJ7's.

Well, just a little soft update... Joe Bunetic has my intake manifold and is building my tripower and linkage right now. I'm looking forward to seeing his work...

Joe Bunetic was busy over Christmas with his family and the usual, and I was in no hurry particularly to get my intake with the carbs built, but here they finally are. Also shown are the Nicson Beehive marine flame arrestors.... note that spacers will have to be made to offset the breathers so they fit... but I love the look. Man, Joe does very very nice work.

Joe is an interesting guy... very modest about what he does, and very fussy. He sent me photos before he sent the assembly back, and told me he assembled them, and didn't like the color, so he took them all apart and had them recolored...

Absolutely stunning

I'm going to get some better pics...but I am very pleased with the result.

Funny, when this whole project started, I was going to repaint the engine, freshen the ignition and restore the boat and use it. Now here I am two years later, and apparently I am going for vintage hot rod show motor and boat. Can you say obsessive/compulsive?

Well folks, it's been a long absence. Life does hand you some curves, and with aging parents, job change for me, job downsize for my wife, etc etc.... projects got stalled. BUT we're back, and getting ready to assemble this beastie for once and for all. I have gathered a few extra hard to find gaskets and so on, a NOS set of Iskenderian chrome moly push rods, decided on tubing style (going with copper, Chris Craft did originally, it's sort of a marine tradition) polished a few more things.... you know the drill. Poke away when you can, and wait out the storm. Stay tuned, good to see some familiar names here still.
