1965 Lincoln 430 MEL To 1965 F-250

Post by Chris430 » Sat 3. Aug 2019, 09:11

Finally starting to piece this thing together a little at a time. Cranked and ran the 430 about 2 minutes at a time. No signs of it hammering the best I could hear over the open exhaust.

Swapped in the 63/64 Galaxie FE engine mounts and broke the Cruise-O-Matic loose.

I have a 66 F-100 chassis that I am using for mock up. The 65 F-100 and F-250 2 wheel drives shared the same frame. As far as I know so does the 66, at least all the important areas are the same as the 65.

One snag is the starter location. The 61-68 430/462 MEL dropped the starter 2" to clear the new chassis. I can make a bracket to catch the Lincoln and FE bell housing bolts and mount a Chevrolet starter in or cut up a couple of donor bell housings and place the Ford/Lincoln 3 bolt starter in the right place. At one time I had a 65 430 mated to this FT bell housing. There was room with the FT bell and flywheel, should be the same with the pickyp parts. In any case the block/bell spacer plate will need to be modified. The FE pick-up flywheel is larger in diameter than the 61-68 MEL. The FT is even bigger. Since the two left side, two top and both Lincoln dowls are the same as the FE the stress on the new starter pocket will be minimal. Pictured are an FT bell housing and the parts donor cast iron automatic bell from a 59 MEL. They will be the fabricated pieces if I go that route.

Dropped the Lincoln 430 in place of the Ford 352 FE. At this point it is a bolt up using factory parts. The 63/64 engine mounts made the MEL look like a factory install. The mounts were RockAuto clearance items. I had to set the mount to the engine with the passenger engine perch loose after the engine was in place. If I had gotten a little better quality engine mount it probably would have been a smoother bolt up. Nothing a little die grinding can't work out.

If I use the Lincoln exhaust manifolds the passenger side pipe is going to need a dog leg to clear the frame. The driver side exhaust manifold dumps in the right place.

Oil pan clears the cross member. Even dumps oil on the cross member like the FE did.

A little more progress. Here is a good look at the back of the block with an FE and FT starter alignment / spacer plate. Notice how the FT bell housing kicks the starter out at the bottom to clear the larger flywheel.

I have a C4TA-7505-G truck bell housing in place with the correct angle. A few measurements for anyone ruining about running one with a Clark behind a 2 wheel drive FE or MEL.

A few more pictures and measurements of a Lincoln 430 MEL, FT bell housing and Clark 250V in a 66 F-100 long wheel base chassis.

I finally got the 430 swapped. A few things to clean up and exhaust to plumb in.

This is great info! I bought an FE 3 speed Overdrive trans and bellhousing to put behind a 430 and quickly noticed the starter issue so I put the auto back behind it for the time being. My plan was to get the 3 speed all set up until I could run a Toploader. What are you doing about a pilot bearing?

Thanks'
I reused the pilot bearing from the 352. The 58- 65 3.7" stroke cranks have the same tail end as an FE. Don't know about the 383 and 462 but it would make sense if it was the same also.

Next on the table is swapping in the Clark 282V, the Brown Lipe 5531 and 3.54 rear gears.
