Holley Carburetor Throttle plate Rebuild

This is a secondary carburetor assembly
Remove the throttle plate from the carburetor assembly. We want to completely break this down.
As you can see there are 4 retaining screws and some associated hardware that needs to be removed.

Flip the piece over and using a drill press or a hand drill carefully drill off the ends of the screws.
Do not drill through. You can see that they were originally staked over to prevent them from backing out.
HPIM2365.jpg
Pull out the throttle shaft. You will see the three nylon bushings.
HPIM2366.jpg
Notice the brass shaft is relieved to accept the bushings. The new shaft has no relief and will be used with bronze bushings.

The bottom shaft is original equipment the top shaft is a new unit with modified ends to mimic the original. You can use this when using new Holley Carburetors. You can also use the new shaft as mentioned, if you would like to use bronze bushings in the old plates.

With my Dremel tool I brushed the bores clean. Carefully clean up the shafts and plates.

On a good flat surface using a piece of 320 paper carefully sand down the surface.

Side to side …back to front.. Then, on a diagonal back and forth…
Check for flatness by rocking corner to corner or check with a dial gauge.
HPIM1048.jpg
You will get a perfectly flat surface (both sides) like this.

We can begin re-assembly with new bushings screws and throttle plates.
In this illustration I positioned the bushings on the shaft. You can hold them in position with a little masking tape.

Note: You can use nylon but I prefer Teflon. You can buy small sheets and cut it yourself.
If you prefer There are lots on-line suppliers as well. The thickness is about .022 You can buy the thickness you need.
You can source Nylon or Teflon material at http://WWW.McMasterCarr.Com

Use Loc-tite when installing the screws.
Here are the finished Secondary Throttle plate assemblies. They will move as smooth as silk.
