Carburetor adjustment procedure: Mixture and Idle.
1 Run the engine till it's at operational temperature.
2 Attach a vacuum gauge and/or a tune-up Tach
3 Set your idle RPM to 800 in park. E-Brake on, wheels chocked.
4 Turn the mixture screw in or Lean on the passenger side first until the vacuum or the Tach starts to drop.
Then ....stop.
5 Next, Turn the mixture screw outward or richer on the passenger side, watch the vacuum gauge and keep turning until it won't gain any more vacuum. Observing the Tach. Again turn the mixture screw outward or richer on the passenger side, watch the Tach and keep turning until it won't gain any more RPM.
6 Do the same for the driver's side.
7 Re-adjust the idle to 800 RPM.
I suggest you repeat the procedure 2 or 3 times to get that perfect adjustment.
That's it!
A healthy stock engine should give you a steady 17-22 inches of vacuum at Idle.
You will get a lower reading of vacuum if put the vehicle in drive. Lower RPM's will make lower vacuum.
