DIY 022 Hood Insulation for your M E L

Post by 59lincolnrag » Sun 15. Jun 2014, 15:01

Working on the Lincolns today .. and I need to spruce up under the hood. A friend told me he was buying under hood pads from a supplier. There are two problems, the price and the material.
The hood pads supplied look like some type of black spun cloth. As for the look, well it don't even come close.

Heres what I did for my two vehicles.

I got a few discarded fiberglass ceiling tiles from a nearby construction site. They are yellow semi ridged fiberglass.

Made paper templates......and
My lovely wife cut out the hood pads. We made several sets......

I removed the hood, prepped it and shot it with one step Presidential Black.

Using some 3M adhesive, spray the pad and the hood . Wait till the adhesive sets then place and press the pads in place.

It depends on the look you want.
You can leave it bare fiberglass.
or ....You can also spray on some under coat to give it that factory look.

I masked off the frame work of the hood. Then sprayed the inner panels with special trunk paint. It gives a rough finish and acts as a sound deadener.

Spray the exposed side of the fiberglass insulation with rubberized undercoating.

Let everything dry .............

Spray the underside of the pads with adhesive ...let it tack up..

Spray the hood indentations let the adhesive tack up...

Press in place

The correct OEM specification and look, for the 1959 Lincoln Continental. Sound deadener, insulation, blacked out surface and a bonus of a semi ridged dense insulation. Note there is no insulation required above the radiator. Just the black speckle paint shows.
