New unread post will always mark a category red while being yellowish itself. That's a very convenient way to detect new posts since your last visit.
However it is cookie based and will only work if you're logged in. I recommend to log in each time you visit the forum. Also selecting the "Log me on automatically each visit" option is quite practical.
