Possible Method Of Retrofitting A 460 Into An Early Linc

An earlier post from an other board:

I came across this and thought that it may be adaptable to the LINC chassis. I know there is a lot of interest by some in upgrading the powertrain in the older LINCS as the MEL is so expensive to work on.

-Engine Swap From FE to 460 In Galaxy Chassis-

(Article In URL Below)

The above article describes retrofitting a 460 into a FORD FE chassis. As the MEL and FE engine mounting pads were in the same general area (I know because a 430 went into a '57 FORD chassis with only 390 mounts), it may be possible to use the modified 390 mounts shown later in a early LINC (60/68) chassis. The frame mounts appear to be approx. the same. You would need to take measurements to say for sure but I have a feeling that they are about the same between the two lines.

Below is a photo of an early LINC engine compartment (Thanx to bharris as I stole it from his album) to show this similiarity.

Here is a photo of the modified mid-sixty FE mount (one side shown only);

I don't know for certain that this will work on the LINC, but it would be an easy way to mount a 460 without fabbing engine mounts.

UPDATE: MAY 02

As for this gentleman's request of a 1973 FORD 460/C6 retrofit into a 1967 CONTINENTAL...The 460 was factory installed in the 1968 so most components are going to remain the same between the two years. The engine crossmember is the same but the parts book shows different insulators (and brackets-1968). I am sure this can be easily overcome. Another difference is the rear mount on the trans. The CONT uses a side mounted trans mount instead of the mount we are more used to seeing. You would either have to modify the crossmember to accept the later 1973 CC mount or possibly find an earlier LINC C6 tailshaft housing.

With the cost of and difficulty finding the required parts and maching shops familiar with the MEL Engine(s)...It may become more practical to retrofit more modern power to the early LINCOLN.
