Re: Rebuild or...

Before any teardown, and being on a budget, I would buy, borrow or rent a compression tester to check the engines condition. If valves got bent it should show. Leakdown tester would be better but barring that the compression test line can be adapted to a compressed air source so any cylinder leaks c...

Re: MEL 430 in Holman Moody Thunderbirds

I've heard/read the handling thing too but I'm not sure I believe it.
One article really was by someone who obviously didn't speak MEL.

Plus I have a '59 J code project. ;)

Re: New MEL camshafts

Sounds like a good cam Jim.

I'm a fan of the split lift/duration cams and have used regrinds on Mel as well as 392 Hemi's with good results so far.

Ford used split duration and lift on the 385 series engines from the factory.

Re: Jim from California

Howdy Jim.

Regarding timing sets, when I compared FE, 385, and even other brands, didn't find a compatable set. That's not to say there isn't one, just didn't find it at that time.

FYI, I did modify my factory type cam gear to acccept a Mopar offset dowel bushing kit to degree the cam.

True, true.
I made a mockup of what I wanted out of a 383 piston so I could say make this.
Just because no one at that time spoke MEL, not even occasionally.

Re: boring 64 430

I agree don't worry. Given the same piston dimensions except bore, the compression increase will only be slight due to the increase in combustion chamber size from the overbore. A .060" overbore can wipe out the cylinder depression located on the plug side, but it does not need to go back in. Haven'...

Very true, wall thickness is always an issue.

Re: Boring the 1958-1960 430

Brian Perrenot is running 100 thou over pistons in the Gizzlehopper, and told me his dad used to use 150 thou over pistons on one engine. The issue is not wall thickness, but integrity of the cast. These are old sand cast blocks, and on a good one, 150 wouldn't be too much, on others you could go 6...

Re: Bellhousing Bolt Patterns

The 460 engine block (1968/ ) had both the previous 462 LINC SPECIFIC bell pattern AND the FORD CORPORATE C6 bell pattern. When I checked a dual pattern 460 to the 462 I found the 462 trans would not bolt to the dual pattern 460. You can see this in the pics when you compare the dowel locations to ...

Re: Air Conditioner bracket for a 383 needed.

I might have a set for the later MEL engines. Not sure if it the same.

Barring that you could call Big M auto in California.
