Re: 61 430 ENGINE REBUILD

Instead of going to all of the expense of updating pistons, did you check the runner size ( to see if the later 4V intake runners are smaller than the 2V cyl head runners? As long as they are smaller (and not larger) the small turbulence caused by that mis-match will not alter significantly the flow...

Re: Bellhousing Bolt Patterns

Simply Put (And Thanks To HAWKROD For The Photos)- THE 58-60 MEL (383-410-430) used the FE bell pattern. The pattern was modified in 1961 to fit the drive-train (relocated starter motor mounting position) into the new slabside LINC chassis. It was a modification of the FE. This pattern was used fro...

Re: 430 cid Coolant Diverters

61-68 Solid Brass Engine Block Water Diverter Set. (These press into the front of the block behind the water pump and divert the cooling water up into the heads. When your diverters disintegrate, the heads starve for coolant and overheat. Measure the diameter of the hole, as they can be either 1 1/2...

Re: What crankshaft options do I have?

June 7 2005, 5:54 AM NO PROVISION FOR PILOT BUSHING? Do you have the crank out? Does it have a Casting I.D. No. on it such as EDF OR EDG? 58 MERCS came through with standard trans. It should take a pilot bushing. As far as crank trade, the 383 block is the same as the 430. So you can go to a 430 or ...

Re: New Fan

HEY LISTEN! I forgot to add... Make sure you tell them you want your engines rebuilt and not taken as a core. There are several Casting I.D. Nos. on the left pan skirt and cylinder head(s). Make sure you record those (post them here) to make sure you have a balanced set and get the same stuff return...

Re: New Fan

June 1 2005, 12:24 AM ...whew..I have not come across any mention of a dedicated shop for these engines. It seems most have them redone locally. I think in your case, I would look at MARINE machine shops that are familiar with both MARINE and MEL. If (and when) I have one redone, I will most likely ...

May 17 2005, 1:12 PM Freeing Up Engine Yes, let the solvent sit in the cylinders for a few days and then try to turn manually. Can you get a socket on the crank snout bolt? It would be much easier than trying to turn it with the ring gear. Try it turn a little-forward and backwards. Go easy on it. I...

May 14 2005, 11:00 PM Welcome I am not too familiar with marine engines. Is it possible one may be reverse rotation? NO. 1 Cylinder will be on the right front bank. You then have 1-2-3-4 front to rear on the right bank and 5-6-7-8 front to rear on the left bank. Distributor rotation (car engine) is ...

Re: time for the rebuild

MARINE ENGINESN.........May 31 2005, 1:40 PM I never fooled with MARINE (poor boy you know) so I have very limited knowledge. I haven't had a shop for many years but am thinking of starting a small one for FORD specific repairs and modifications. Would you believe just a few days ago, I was research...
