Update on removing block plugs....

I sucessfuly got out the 1/4" pipe plugs from my water jackets. I used lots of heat, candle wax and ez out. At first after heating them they still would not bulge so I throwed more heat at them and they came on out. Also removed my bellhousing dowels with vise grips and heat. Thanks to all who responded below. Now I need to find some good quality brass drain cocks that will stand the 200 + degree water. I want these in case I ever need to drain the block.

you might try something like this. Drains from both sides and is much easier to get at. Mike

I will answer your mail or call to catch up within a day or so. But while it is on my mind, I wanted to mention something about the drain cocks. (Back in the day) I used to put them in every motor I pulled. I think I remember an issue with the wings(?) having interference with the motor mounts on some applications. So if you use them, stick them in place, put motor mount in place and make sure all clears. Will talk soon, Ron

here is what I did

December 21 2008, 8:51 PM

for the drains, just used petcocks like for a radiator. Work great, I just push a length of hose on them (other end in a bucket) and turn. My headers are back out of the way so it works for me.

Whew that remote drain looks complex for how often it could get used

Heck draining a block leaves plenty of moisture/air in block to cause rust so it's better to run antifreeze and thats a long term service

Yeah, but

Once you've tried getting at those drain plugs with the headers on, the few hours of work it takes to set that up seems way worth it. Plus, now I won't have any excuse to put of changing my antifreeze.

NAPA has real nice quality combo Stainless Steel/Brass drain valves

December 22 2008, 7:42 AM

on the shelf and they also offer thread on cap/plugs that enable you to put drains in Auto Trans Pans so you can drain down an Auto-Trans w/o the full shower treatment when pulling off the pan. Of course Murphy's Law like everything else chances are they will now made in China and half the price/quality

Craig, if you have a Mercruiser(Mercury Marine)dealer near by, ask their service dept if they have any used block drains you could look at. They are brass and have a stout tapered petcock. I use them and work great. Don
