I working on a Friends 61 Falcon it has a 1979 351 Windsor in it. He had the engine built to a 408 any way from the get go it has had a slight rear seal oil leak. It has the 2 piece rear seal. What is the best way to repair it? The trans is out for a rebuild. Does the crank have to be dropped to replace the seal?
Thanks
Glen

Some people claim that the 2-piece seals can be replaced w/o

loosening all main caps. I've always loosen all main caps which will give a little more room to negotiate the r/m seal in & out. I stagger seal ends in block/main cap, not joining them together at block. Remember, seal lips point in, not out, when you're on your back & facing upward under car. Good time to inspect bearings and r & r if needed.
Good Luck.
On SB Fords, the crankshafts flywheel bolts are open to the crankcase, in other words if the flywheel bolts are installed without some type of sealer or Locktite, oil can wick thru the threads of the flywheel bolts & leak oil onto the clutch, or drip out of the bottom of the bellhousing. Worth taking a look at.

What I was hoping it was, but the Flex plate bolts were dry and had lock tite sealer on them. I will make sure that the ends are staggered in the block and lips face in.
