Hi,I am new to the site, been doing some reading and research.I am building a 65 galaxie for a street strip toy. I am putting together a 390 for it.Planning to use e85 as it is easy to get where I am(Holland,MI).Looking at hyperneutectic pistons in a 11 or 12 to 1 range. I'll have adjustable valvetrain . How much can be safely milled off the heads? I don't want to go any more than neccessary.Thanks.
i have a set of C1AE's that that were milled down from the 76 range to 69cc. machine shop didnt want to take it much further. it could have went lower but wasnt nessecary for what i wanted. e-85 would be an intresting build, id shoot for 12:1 if i were you. buddy of mine has a 500 c*!#y motor that dynod at 635ftlbs and 428hp to the wheels. with only a cam, 12:1, no head work(stock iron), no headers, aftermarket intake, running e85. a word of warning get a carb that is setup for it. he is battling issues with his. he cant find any bigger jets for it, but it still wants more. he may have other tunning issues with it though. he also says its a bitch to start especially in the cold. takes alot of fuel to make it run.
C7ae-a's,going to do some mild porting and bowl work, work with the seat angles.may go 2.09/1.65 .want to get compression without milling heads.12 to 1 would be great,I don't plan any nos on this motor.Stock 2u crank and stock rods.
bigger valves, i had the cj sized valves and some pocket porting done to my C1AE's. money well spent. do your research, take the time building it, a good cam to match the comp and E-85, i think youll have a hard running 390. Depending on what you are looking for you may need better heads, or atleast a really good port and valve job for some good flow. think there is better heads to start with. use the search function and start digging up info on heads, you find alot of info on what heads are best for what. if you were wanting to go aluminum id say a set of edelbrocks would be a good choice.
either way read up, depending on what you build you will want to do some mods or use certain parts. fe's have some quirks with them. oh and you may wanna consider forged pistons. oh and welcome aboard and keep us posted. id like to know how that would run.
