I am running a new, stock oil pump in my hopped up 390--without getting into the stock vs. HV vs. HP oil pump debate, is there any reason to run an ARP oil pump drive shaft if I am using a stock oil pump?
When you think about it the FoMoCo FordMotorsport FE drives were dimensionally

the same as Ford OEM this meant the metal was the same only the tempering was different..........That means you get into a mess with flexible vs rigid and that opens a whole new can of worms
Ford Power Parts offered HDTruck oil pumps that required larger dia oil pump driveshafts

in turn they offered a HD large Dia shaft that fit the lager input on the HD Truck pumps drive rotor and was necked down to stock FE size to mate with the distributor. Since the drive comes off the Distrib gear the whole thing was likely BS since the weakest part of the drive drove the oil pump anyway...

I bought one of Dougs HD truck pumps and the bigger shaft and they are good quality pieces. I agree the necked down area at the distributor is probably the weakest but the bigger diameter shaft will stop twisting in the whole shaft and that is a plus.
Call Doug and get his advice.
I bought a Fordmotorsports shaft once. It broke. I called them and was told that my oil pump locked up. It didn't. Had to go through the engine one more time. Needless to say, I won't be buying another. Moose.
