I have a '74 F350 with a 390 that I am thinking of putting into my '68 Cougar. What is the best route to turn the FE into a stroker? I mean to mate her up to the Cougars T4 for now and possibly a T56 in the future.

Thanks in advance.

Troy, this is the place for good FE advice but having built the 456cid in my '66 Galaxie the old fashioned way, meaning mixing and matching parts and taking it apart a few times when i found out that some tolerance or stack-up or fit wasn't right, I say call Barry R. at Survival Motorsports. Barry is a regular contributor on this forum and is a died-in-the-wool Ford FE guy. He has several proven stroker combinations, any of which will arrive ready to go. His work is backed up by dyno figures and his reputation is first cabin. Just ask about him on the Forum.

For your 390 they make a 445cid stroker combo based on all new parts. Look around and do your homework and i think you will find that the price and performance as excellent. fwiw if i were going to build again I would buy one of Barry's kits. By the time i got done pulling the motor and rebuilding "one more time!" to fix all the screw-ups with my custom low-budget stroker i spent WAY more money than Barry charges. Good luck!

390 stroker kits

November 28 2008, 1:43 AM

Just find out what size the block will make on the bore and install a 4.250 stroke crankshaft to have your self great package with a lot of low end torque. The complete kit you can get with the Scat or eagle crankshaft, Scat 6.700 I-beam rods. Probe or Diamonf forged pistons, Plasma Moly rings and Federal Mogul bearings. We can zero balance it where your damper and flywheel work from the 390. Let us know if we can help.

Thanks, Keith Craft
