best setup...

In my opinion the only thing you gain with the MSD is a rev limiter in the 6AL box. (L for limiter) The regular Duraspark box will fire fine at most any FE revs. I also use a TFI coil. The box can be out of any Duraspark equipped 77 to mid 80's type, 4 banger Pinto or 460 truck doesn't matter. The coil can be out of any 87 and up also, Taurus or Mustang, same thing. I usually try and get the wiring between the box and distributor to get the D shaped plugs but in older cars these could be cut of and different plugs spliced in.

The only FE specific piece is the Duraspark distributor and that can even be made up with some work.

RE best setup

Tom, what is the difference in the regular Dura spark coil & the TFI, Voltage?? never thought about using one, I use dura spark in all my Ford engine swaps @ the shop, I get the dist.coil, & blue grommet module from Autozone & if I want a better coil I use MSD Blaster, maybe I should try the TFI coil! On my 56 I use an old Ford Motorsport coil & module kit that was given to me by a Ford dealer that used to sponsor my Torino, don't know if there is anything special about the module other than it has a revlimiter. You can use a Mallory 6-AL as well~

November 15 2008, 12:19 PM

I have used both MSD 6AL and Mallory 6AL. I like both but I do like the fetures of the Mallory a little better then the MSD and cheaper in the ole pocket book too. JMO Nothing wrong with any of them. Just personal choice is all! Good Luck......
