I am sure somebody here can set me straight on this. I have always been a little confused on "high" vs "low" gears. And "tall vs short" gears. If someone could give an example for both terms I would appreciate it.

4.56:1 is low while 2.56 to 1 is high. As too tall and short I am not sure.

High gears = tall gears = low numerical number (like 2.78:1)

Low gears = short gears = high numerical numbers (like 4.56:1)

Think of a transmission, in HIGH gear you can go faster, in LOW gear you accelerate quicker, same with the rear axle.

Tall and short can also be remembered by how long you will stay in each gear, with a low gear set, 1st gear wont last long, it will be SHORT, and then you have to shift. TALL would be like "long legged" you can stretch it out a bit
