"IF" a head is cracked, say between the valves in the combustion chamber, can it be repaired? If so, are there areas where a crack on the head " Can't" be repaired by a competent machine shop. Thanks, Warren.

they can be . . .

repaired, but you have to ask yourself if it is worth it. If it is a rare head, then the best way is to have the head heated to the point of it becoming "rubbery". Then the welding is done and the heat is removed slowly in such a way that there are no problems later. It is expensive and time consuming to do it this way. Only certain places are capable of this type of repair. I have repaired iron before by using some common sense, preheating and post heating. It has worked perfectly . . there are places that can do that.

Not so much as "rubbery" but the Welding Repair Line at MCC used an.......

..........induction furnace to heat the parts to a color of orange that nearly matched the color the parts were when they were pulled from the mold. Heat Treat furnaces here at T&C "soak" the parts at 1500+ degress and attain nearly the same orange. After the parts were repaired at MCC there was a "cooling" oven, Rod.

Welder

Larry Ladd could weld the crack of dawn if it was cast iron. He has a welding page on his web site.

Indy cylinder

I have heard that Indy Cylinder Head (or Repair) can weld a broken heart if you can bring the welding rods. I hear they are not cheap but cast iron should be a snap for them. I agree it depends on how rare the cyl head is that you have.

Good Luck

LOL, no value to the question here, but.......................

November 9 2008, 12:36 PM

you guys are reminding me of an old friend of mine who was a welder. His company logo had this printed in the center: " We can weld up anything from the crack of dawn to a broken heart". Probably not that uncommon back then, but was the first time I had seen it. I know he did weld blocks and heads, but I don't remember anything about his process. I have done a bit of novice welding on a few blocks over the years with cast rod and with brazing and know that, as stated, the preheat and cool down process is critical. RonW

Re: Iron head repair

I have welded cast on my tractor. It requires a special rod and heat as stated already. This was done probably 15 years ago. I'm no expert. On a head crack just get someone who has done it before. The tractor still works and yes it is a FORD Mike . FE's are like boobs you need at least two and the bigger the better.

head repair

November 9 2008, 7:54 PM

I don't know where you are from as shipping is expensive. I had a head fixed this year. The camber was a mess, it had dropped a valve 30 years ago. this is for a numbers matching Cougar cj restore, so I wanted the head fixed. The place is in Navada Iowa. I remember when I was kid people swore by them to fix any thing. They were just bought out by Arnold Motors. They shipped them for me, gave me an estimate, and called me when they were back at the store. Fantastic job and service. I think it cost me two hundred thirty and some change with new guides and plane. The head looked like new.
