HELLO, TO ALL FORD F.E. LOVERS!! THIS IS MY FIRST POSTING ON THE FORUM. I HAVE BEEN REVIEWING PAST POSTINGS FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS, TRYING TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAS EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR PROBLEM AS I HAVE BEEN HAVING. THE PROBLEM IS: A REAR MAIN BEARING SEAL LEAK! THIS IS 1967, 427 BLOCK. FRESHLY REBUILT! THE CRANK IS STD./MAINS AND THE RODS ARE STD. AS WELL. THE RUBBER 2-PIECE SEAL TOP HALF, DOESN'T SEEM TO FIT SNUGGLY IN THE GROOVE IN THE BLOCK. IT DOES HOWEVER FIT TIGHTLY IN THE GROOVE IN THE CAP. I THEN INSTALLED A ROPE SEAL, AND I STILL GOT A LEAK--BAD!! I HAVE REBUILT MANY OF THIS STYLE [F.E.] ENGINE OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS, AND THIS IS THE FIRST ONE TO GIVE ME A PROBLEM LIKE THIS! I HAVE ELIMINATED THE CAM PLUG AND THE GALLEY PLUGS ON THE BACK OF THE BLOCK AS POSSIBLE CAUSES. ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS? THANKS- DYNO427

Just a bit of advice. Typing in all capitals is considered shouting in internetspeak.
A lot of people here will not respond to posts like this...

As to your question, I have no idea but it's a good one! LOL

sorry about the "all caps"--my mistake! i might add to the problem of the oil leak by asking-- has anyone had a problem with the oil leak originating on or around where the oil pan gasket seals against the main bearing cap itself? i am using a windage tray , so there are naturally, 2 gaskets. thanks

Your leak may be where the cap meets the block at the sides. I used RTV black on the seals, installed the cam and drove the nails which pushed some of the rtv out the crevasses. FWIW, the seal shouldn't be loose in the block groove. I probably would have run a thin bead of rtv there also if mine would have been that loose.

i remember someone saying...

and it was a heck of a quote... "a picture of an FE will leak oil" i think it's fair to say the FE is not the most oil-tight of engines. i've currently got my engine in pieces, and i'm looking into converting/machining the rear main cap and block to take a modern lip type seal. there has to be a way. ...and it may stop the wife moaning about the odd oil mark on the new driveway... maybe...

You don't need to machine anything...
