The 31 spline version is the WAR 9 3/8" version. These axles are not interchangeable with a 9" 31 spline differential. The splines are the same but the axle lengths are different. The axle housings are the same. Mike

The WAR case is not a 9 3/8 and wasn't used in 67 N/M

9" didn't show up until 1960 or so.

October 12 2008, 10:26 AM

The first of the 9" differentials were available from 1957-1959 or so. These were actually 8-3/4" diffs. Something was modified in 1960 and all the production ratios seem to have changed. The result was the 9" gearset. Not sure why ford did this, but the 9" is referred to in factory literature as the 8-3/4 or 9", particularly when buying gears.

A few years later, the 9-3/8" differential was released, and it contained a gearset with either a 9-3/8" ring gear or else a gearset with a 9-3/4" ring gear. You will sometimes hear the 9-3/8" diff called the 9-3/4", particularly when buying gears. The cases seem to be the same between the 9-3/8" and 9-3/4", but I may be wrong.

JMO,
Shoe.

8 3/4 and 9 inch are the same thing except for outer ring gear diameter

October 12 2008, 5:53 PM

The 9 was made in 57 for heavy duty applications and part numbers were the 4.11 was a B7A 4209-F, the 3.89 was a B7A 4209-J, the 3.70 was a B7A 4209-M and in 58 they added B8AZ-4209-C wich was a 3.25. For 57 there were also 8 3/4 inch in most regular applications and the 3.70 was a B7A 4209-A, the 3.89 was a B7A 4209-E and the 4.11 was B7A 4209-C. Most rears are 8 3/4 but the 9" was there from the get go. Hawkrod
