I had my headers coated by Airborn (Charlotte) about 5-6 years ago. It's the chrome-like coating. I had a serious oil leak problem at the fuel pump block-off plate on my previous engine and the headers got really saturated during a 1200 mile trip. I didn't clean them off and the oil stayed there for another year of driving.
When I removed the engine I thought it would be a good time to try and clean them. I used Mothers alum cleaner and then some chrome polish. I scrubbed them with the polishes and some of those kitchen cleaning fibre pads. Started with the green pads then used the dark (brown?)ones. Finally used a cotton pad and buffed off to a brilliant finish.
Not a single scratch in the coating and they looked like nearly new, only for the slight discoloration caused by heat. I really scrubed on those stains and it took quite a long time to clean all the tubes. Luckily I had the headers with removeable tubes, making the job slightly easier. I'll never use another coating but Airborn after what these have gone through. Airborn told me to do it this way because the coating cannot be penetrated...thry were correct! |
