We as Americans are a shortsighted bunch (OK, our legislators). If we give bailout money to the Big Three, all we are doing is prolonging the agony. If the REASONS behind dropping unit sales aren't addressed, they'll be back for more when the money (life support) dries up. Address WHY domestics have the wrong vehicle mix, WHY consumers aren't buying, WHY they are less competitive globally. This isn't just a US problem..... with manufacturers so dependent upon international sales (and manufacturing), any stimulus for the automotive industry HAS to be indirect with the END goal being increased sales. Unless the economy itself is shored up and support for automakers comes from the populace, we're just throwing good money after bad. Maybe the media in this country ignores it, but I haven't heard of other governments that are reliant upon Ford, GM, and Chrysler to support their economies offering bailouts/concessions to keep them from failing.
