He had the air cup system before it was later used in F1. You still needed rockers it just used air instead of spring tension to close the valves. I have no idea if his system was his idea or whether it was ever used on a running engine.
It certainly wasn't a bad idea at all and air powered valvespring compressors (for removal) are in common use nowadays.
