i ALWAYS set the preload on the clutch plates in all the trac-loks i do to factory specs trying to keep it at 180- 250 ft/lbs for the best longevity. simply installing the plates into the case will most times lock the side gears up solidly , i have a 3/4 drive torque wench and have seen up to over 600ft/lbs of breakaway torque before side gears moved -- completely unacceptable that is why everyone says the clutch packs never last . don,t use shade tree engineering or advice , Ford designed these units with spec's that work do it right the first time and you will get long life out of your trac-lok.by the way use the later tracion-lok cases late 1970 up as they got rid of the four large holes in the clutch pack cover which made this side of the case much stonger than the earlier cases.
