blower ignition

every time i here of a blown fe,it envolves an intake spacer for the blower drive clear the distributor.why aren't the intakes made to clear it anyway? what would you use for ignition,back in "the day" if you didn't use a distributor.now we can use digital msd and crank trigger.was/is there a cam drive set-up available? i would like to build my car period correct.don't want the msd or the spacer. am i stuck using the spacer or is there an intake available?
