Tough nut

So we have a nut-case that needs to be controlled, but any attempt will result in him racing from internet-cafe to wherever getting all the IP addresses he needs and then he will post replies to every post on several pages of the forum, filling it with his latest demand. I once deleted about 50 of "Quit deleting posts from the forum!!!" posts all over the place.

So I could make it a moderated forum like this one. But that is very harmful to the nature of our work. People need to see their post immediately.

Or I could make it that only network54-id members in a group can post. But that would drive away many, especially newbies who don't want to waste time getting an id/password.

Is there a medium? Namely, for logged-on-permitted people they can post immediately and for others, they are moderated?

I thought of making all the members (except nuts) moderators and then making the forum moderated. Would all these members immediately see all posts? How does that work?

It's easier than that. (M)

Set "Anyone" to Post moderated. If you want all logged in users to see their posts immediately, set "Anyone w/a
N54 login to "post", "Post HTML", or "Revise". If you only want specific logged in users to see their posts immediately, create a group, add those users to it (or make them apply), set that group to one of the above permissions, and then set "Anyone with a N54 login" to "Post (Moderated)". If this doesn't make sense or you don't know how to do any of it, feel free reply as such. I really glossed over the topics in hopes that you know what I'm talking about.

A bit confused.

Say all users except some group are "post moderated". I presume that nobody will see that a post made by such ordinary person.

How will we ever know such a post exists?

On this forum, I post and can go for days without seeing my post. But someone must see them. A "moderator"? That person can delete the post or elect to make it visible to all - right??

I don't want to depend on one or two moderators, who may be away like happens in this forum. I want the new post to appear SOON.

So I could make many people moderators. But what other powers do they have? To edit other people's posts? I don't want that.

I would like a class of people who can approve candidate posts, but otherwise have no powers (except to make their own posts, of course).

You can do that

You can create a group, for argumant sake we'll call "moderators", add a few trusted users to it and give the the power to "approve (moderated)". Their only power on your forum will be to approve posts from people with less access right tham them. They will not have the power to edit or delete anything, just to approve moderated posts. Set your lower-access users to "post-moderated" and then your "moderators" group will be able to moderate them.

Just remember the food chain for access rights and you'll be good to go.

  • You - (forum owner always has the highest access rights)
  • Highest accress groups - Power to edit/delete others as well as their own posts
  • Next Highest - power to approve other posts.
  • Normal Group members - Power to edit/delete their own posts
  • Basic Users - Posting rights can vary at your discretion from Post HTML to Post -Moderated to read-only
  • Users without any login info (anonymous guests) - Least access (can be set to any of the Basic User levels or even to "no access")

Note that the above is just a rough outline of the user levels and you can change them according to your needs. The only constant is the forum owner access level.
