Even a SMALL HOLE of 1-1/2" located 6" below the water line will overcome a 500-GPH bilge pump by 1500 gallons in the course of an hour, and if it was 12" deep, which is probably the case with the cruiser that sank (or deeper), it will overcome a 500-GPH pump by 3261 gallons in the course of an hour.
It the cruiser had a catastropic failure with anything more than a 1-1/2" hole, you can see why it went down so fast.
Very sobering information.
