Lose the 75 now, it's not WORTH fifty bucks on a small block. That is WAY too much carb for that motor and it would only ADD to your problems. It doesnn't take an expert to rebuild a Carter. The only trick part is getting the float set right, and unless you do that, you can have fuel delivery problems.
If you are timed right, and if your distributor is advancing properly, with a proper carb, that motor of yours should sing.
I suppose if all else fails, you could get a 1409 Edelbrock marine 600, but even then you have too much carb for the motor. Paul is running one on his 327 now and it seems to be working reasonably well, but he reported the 4 bbl wasnt opening until pretty high up on the rpm band.
Here is another suggestion. How about getting a spare carter for a few bucks, having someone who knows how to set it to the CC marine setting, and having your old one rebuilt too. That way you always have a spare around to pop on there. Warning, if you swap to an Edelbrock, you may have to change thelinkage a little too. If you stay with the Carters, you swap one for the other in 5 minutes.
