I am thinking about using a 462 in my 59 ranchero. However, I want to use the 58 block that I have so I can use the FE standard trans or my current FE C-6.
Questions:
1) Are the main and rod journals the same size between the 430 and the 462?
2) If I bore the 430 out to the 462 bore size, will the 462 rotating assembly fit into the 430?

If this will interchange OK, I am going to offset grind the 462 crank down to fit something smaller (maybe SBF) to get a stroke out of it. Would like to move out to about 500 CI just for the S&G's.

Anyone know the answer to the above?

MEL bore spacing 4.90, FE bore spacing 4.63, small block Ford 4.38, 429-460 bore spacing 4.90 ( but crank mains 3.00 vs 2.90 for MEL ).

The rotating asm from the 462 will fit the 430. I do not know if the 462 crank was machined for a pilot bearing, so check for that. Also be aware there was a camshaft change in 1961 and requires before and after cam and cam gears.

When you said grind 462 crank to SBF size, I missed the word " offset ". Now I understand your intention to stroke MEL. I thought you wanted to swap MEL crank into SBF. See what happens when you run out of coffee like I did. Thanks again, Brian.

Now that would be a trick putting that big old 462 crank into a sbf.

Thanks, I figure that if I use the 58 430 block which will bore .125 over no sweat, offset grind the crank by only 3/8 of an inch which is also no sweat, I will end up with about 545 Cubes. This in my 1959 Ford Ranchero with my E-475 Edsel valve covers, I'll have a real torque monster and look cool besides.

4.30 + 1/8" = 4.425"
462 crank 3.83" offset 3/8" = 4.205"
517", not 545"
