First off, it costs $300 to plate a set of valve covers these days so they are worth at least $200 if they are usable even with some flaking. Second, all you had to do was look it up in a parts book and you would see that they are exactly as he described them. From the 1959 Mercury parts book: Cover (valve rocker arm) PB8M 6582-C Plated - also use FEU-12297-B No. Req (2) Model 430-6V 1958. Those are correct Super Marauder covers. Hawkrod

You are correct. I have a set of mercury valve covers that are unchromed and appear identicle. I assumed that these covers were the same, just taken to a shop and chromed. All the maruaders I have seen have had aluminum covers. My mistake. Mea Copa. TJR

The aluminum rocker covers were an option above the option. They had to be specified.
Now my assumption was if not ordered, painted rocker covers were supplied with assembly. It may be the chromed were standard on the M-400 option and aluminum were an option.
Remember, this option (M-400) was factory assembly and available over the counter. This may explain a difference also.
Thanx for the info HAWKROD!

I didn't know about an aluminum cover either. I've seen a few chrome sets. In fact just a few days ago, there was a pair of rough and rusty chrome ones on ebay. There were aluminum covers in the aftermarket. I know that offy cast some but I don't know if they even had the offenhauser name on them. Did any other company make covers? I have seen the factory aluminum covers for the 368 Y block 56-57 Lincoln too.

I have adapters for BBC valve covers out of 6061t6 3/8 billit aluminum.. These will adapt any outside bolt cover(NOT SHEETMTEAL FABBED COVERS)from a 454.....

Ithink they were not wide enough and not long enough one of the two but it was a toss between the two... Plus you can get alot more choices with BBC covers like mooneyes and calcustom and such plus the run of the mill edelbrock and stuff like that so that where the choice was made... they are a little bit wider than the MELs but they look BEEF sitting on there!!

Well ...put it this way.....
10 years ago two guys came to my house wanting to buy my collection.
They took pictures of my cars and detailed pictures and measurements of of my Tri power set up...they claimed it was fake.
The following year they had a tri-power setup on their car at the LCOC National meet. They own a machine shop in Maryland. I saw their car again at the LCOC meet in Maryland back in 2001 Claiming they have an Original one.
Funny thing is the setup on my car is exactly whats in my Lincoln parts manual. The set up on their car looked home made....??
All my factory Documentation Indicates I got the real thing. The factory Indicates a chrome plated Valve cover and shows chrome in the various pictures including the owners manual.
However I have nothing to support the Aluminum valve covers, Although I just acquired a pair recently.
The valve covers have no markings or casting numbers. They look identical to the ones in the image in the pictures above. In fact thats exactly what my engine looks like. In the Lincoln parts manual I can account for every part right down to the linkage clips and hose clamps.

The chrome rocker covers on the LINC SM Option are correct. They are plain with no RAISED M (MERC Specific). I have also come across two distinctly different LINC Specific air cleaner assemblis (SP?) ASSEMBLIES.
The cast aluminum rocker covers were MERC SM Option specific (unless an enthusist bought them over the counter). The only other difference (other than starter motor cutout safety switch) was the heater outlet tube (to the best of my knowledge).
I am in no way an expert or consider myself as such.
