Ive got my block together and my heads are coming back from the guy who is porting and polishing them on thurs. so im putting my roller rockers on my new shafts that i got from falcon. im using comp cams roller FE rockers. and my question is this. The comp cams rockers have two oiling holes that are on either side of the ring grove midway through the bore that rides on the shaft. on 8 of the rockers the holes are front left and rear right ( if your holding the lifter right side up and the bearing to your chest) and the other eight are front right rear left ( exactly opposite as the other eight) NOW IM GUESSING that this is to off set half of the lifters getting oil half the time and the other half of the lifters getting oil the other half of the time. maybe this is correct maybe not.
1. If any one has a service manual could they check and let me know if any info on this for stock mel lifters.(sorry i need to get off my ass and get a manual)
2. if anyone has done this set up and figured this out let me know
3. If anyone is just tooo smart for their own good and knows this for no reason other than they just know this because thats what they do is know stuff((kultulz)) please let me know!!!! (kultulz is the man..sorry i couldnt help it)))

Let Me Ask You A Question First...

Are you using stock 430 shafts or FE? Are the roller rockers adjustable (intended for solid cam FE) and is the cam hydraulic or solid (roller/flat tappet)?

Kultulz, FE adjustable rockers are not a solid lifter only thing

You wrote "Are the roller rockers adjustable (intended for solid cam FE)" and I thought you may want to know that adjustable rocker arms were used with hydraulic lifters as well and they are the same rockers as used with solid lifters. Not all FE's with hydraulic lifters had fixed rockers and ford did not "intend" for adjustable rockers to be a solid lifter only thing. For example, 428 SCJ was a hydraulic lifter engine and had adjustable rockers as did many (not all) 58 Ford 332 and 352 engines. Hawkrod

Adjustable-Non Adjustable Valvetrain

Hawkrod"

It seems we are always at one another...

The 428CJ/SCJ had a non-adjustable valvetrain from the factory. Maybe the initial release (Winternationals) had them, but regular production did not. The 1958 332 and 352 early production was solid, and changed to hydraulic later in the production year. The only other adjustable valvetrain (other than 390HP-406-427) were the PI 390/428 with solids. Valve adjustment on a FE (hydraulic) is performed with pushrod length, as I am sure you know.

I also understand the use of adjustable rocker arms on a hydraulic cam.

Please provide documentation if I am wrong.

As you know, the rocker shafts are different between solid and hydraulic. This is what I am trying to establish to help determine proper oil supply. It seems these tech questions always leave out the most important information needed to help.

When is that BIRD going to be running?

For what it is worth, I have found several FE adjustalbe rocher assemblies with the cast iron stands on trucks in wrecking yards. Sorry, I can't remember years. But they were late 60's or early 70's pickups. TJR

I am sorry if I am wrong about the SCJ as I am under the impression they were adjustable while the CJ was not, but the 58's very often had hydraulics and adjustable rockers after the change from solid lifters. For documentation look in your 49-59 parts book (or your 58 only volume if you have it) and look up 6563 Shaft-Valve Rocker Arm. For 1958 it clearly notes body style "A and S (Mechanical tappets) and (Hydraulic tappets) 18" long -(2) through holes- (8)5/32" holes lower half-used with mechanical or hydraulic tappets & adjustable rocker arms -includes- (2)EAA 6572-A plugs". 6565 Rod-Valve Push and the listing is body style A (with hydraulic tappets) 9.345"/9.355" overall length -(1) oval & (1) cup type end) B8A 6565-C as opposed to B8A 6565-A for solid lifters which is 10.695"/10.705" overall length (1) ball & (1) cup type end for solid lifters and the B8S 6565-AA 9.58"/9.60" overall length-ball type ends for hydraulic tappets. I need very badly the 1949/1959 FORD MPC, along with LINC-MERC info.

Have you seen adjustable rocker arms in late sixties/early seventies 352/360/390 light truck as described? I surely haven't.

About what time period of light truck did you find a 330 (FT) in? I would like to find out if this was some type of fleet deal from FORD for warranty purposes.

It wasn't a 330 FT

It was a 330 XD. They are a bastard child for to Uhaul and similar fleet use (although I have never found one in anything else). It is an FE with FT heads. They made them up to 79 at least. Hawkrod

Rocker Shaft Installation

No score for this post
July 5 2007, 2:18 PM

MEL ROCKER ARM SHAFT ASSEMBLY-

To insure proper valve train lubrication, it is essential that the valve rocker arm shafts and valve rocker arms are assembled correctly for the particular bank on which they are to be installed. When the right bank rocker arm and shaft is completely assembled, the identification notch on the shaft must be facing downward and toward the front of the engine. The left bank rocker arm and shaft must be assembled so the identification notch on the shaft faces downward and toward the rear of the engine.

REMOVING/MOUNTING ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLIES-

Loosen four screws securing respective rocker arm assembly to the cylinder head, evenly and alternately, two turns at a time, until spring tension is removed.

Tighten respective rocker shaft support mounting screws, evenly and alternately (two turns at a time) until they are snug. Tighten mounting screws to 45-50 lbs. ft. torque.

Source- 1958 MERC MANUAL

Note:

Now if you are using a hydraulic cam with adjustable rocker arms, you must first establish correct valve train geometry before setting lash
