It does carry a different PN than the FE.

Well i just found out that the FE shaft is 8.56" long. Guess I will measure mine and see what I come up with. Hopefully it will work, I would much rather put a new one vs a used one. Already cost me one engine.

Let us know what you find. It might be that you can adapt an FE to fit a MEL thereby using a hardened one.

Yeah I thought the shaft would come out the top w/ the dist. removed. I guess not. I will have to wait until I can get the old one out to measure.

In the FE forum I found a company who makes these oil pump shafts. Perhaps he can make them a little longer? Who is able to make a call to Doug of this company? From the Netherlands this is a little bit of a problem.
Perhaps he needs a minimum amount of shafts for his production......

Also for oilpumps for FE motors, so in principle also for MEL?

226 mm, is about 8,9 inch (?). So this is a little longer compared to the FE oil pump drive. There is a difference of about 22mm.

Most Likely...

One needing a HD drive will most likely have to have it fabricated locally as there will not be the demand to set up tooling for the drive.

And then there are the early drives used on combination oil/vacuum pumps.

It would be nice though, especially with a HD pump.

2.24-2.2670" L

FE pumps are interchangeable on the MEL (not sure if compatable with early vacuum pumps-need early parts information).

No, the FE shaft will not fit the MEL as is. The MEL is about 3/16 inch longer. HOWEVER, it can be made to fit. I have just done this and mine works like a champ. I am using one of the FE super strength shafts.

STEPS
1) Take the MEL distributor, remove the gear pin and slide the gear up onto the shaft about 1/16 further up. This lowers the ditributor by 1/16 inch. Now turn the gear 90 degrees and redrill the pin shaft hole and replace the pin.

2) Take a 427 FE cast iron HV/HP pump. The aluminum MEL pump is worthless for hop ups. Mill 1/16 to 3/32 off the bolt on surface of the pump. It will still clear the crankshaft. This raises the pump by the same amount. Now the FE shaft is only 1/32 too short. Not enough to matter.

My MEL holds 80 lbs of pressure at 1000 rpm hot and the shaft works great. No flex, no slip.

Hi Brian, did you ever try to find someone who could make a longer shaft? I am trying to do the MSD FE distributor and FE oil pump. Bestrada11 is having new housings build to replace the FE dist. housing, but the shaft is still an issue. I know you didn't do it that way, but wondering if you looked into it.

Contact Doug at Precision Oil Pumps. They have an FE Drive that is +.375 for use with the Main Girdles. Many MEL guys use this one and just take it to their Bench Grinder and take off what they need. They are $20 call the shop.

Billet drive shaft worked great!

I ordered it from Precision Oil Pumps in Ca, (559)325-3553, and it worked great. The original is literally as thin as a pencil and might very well be not up to the job. This replacement works for the MEL engines. It is an FE drive that is +.0375" Longer for Main Girdle Applications. This shaft is about .075 too long, so this needs to be ground off the bottom (pump end) to make it fit. Just use a bench grinder. The shafts are $20.00 plus shipping.
