What is it?

Have 60 Bird with 430. on the back of the motor is a metal bracket holding a metal line coming up to it from the tranny. The line has a metal cap on it-looks almost like a tire valve. What is this and what is it for?

It is a test port for the trans. Someone somewheres had posted a photo and description from the Shop Manual, so full description should be there.
