Here's all I could find in my restoration guide on the 58 430.

A code "S" as a third digit (in the VIN) would indicate in Dearborn, Michigan. This plant was used for prototype vehicles and testing of new models and equipment. Normally, these vehicles were destroyed after serving their purpose. However some may have been drivin by Ford execs or line employees and were later for sale in the marketplace. Finding a car like this would be a reat treat for the enthusist.

1958 Engine Codes:

G 332 CI 4bbl, low octane for export
H 352 CI Thunderbird Special four bbl.
J 430 CI Thunderbird Special 4bbl*

* It is interesting to note that the main sales catalog printed in March of 1958 advertized the 430 Lincoln engine as an option. This engine was available ONLY with the Cruise-O-Matic. Although in April, Motor Trend Magazine tested a prototype of the 1958 Hardtop with this engine, no exzmples were thought to have been sold to the general public, and the option itself did not officially become available until the 1959 model year. However one convertable, # H8yj129793, is reported to have been equipt with a 430. This engineering prototype had the engine installed in the car after leaving the assembly line.
