"The block has the casting code "ED 6015" but no "A" with the numbers. Does that matter? Also, I can't find the build dates. I have some other markings on the block.. "8AR:1", "11", and a number "5752001" any significance to these numbers?"
ED 6015 identifies the block as being early production 58/59 383 (EDG)/430 (EDJ). In 1959, the casting code began with the series we are more familiar with today, B9ME 6015. The earlier casting had forward engine mounting pads while the later had both front and side. Usually the B9ME had only the center mount pad machined (holes threaded for insulator mounting bolts).
5752001 is a part numbering system unique to 58/59 production run. HAWKROD has more information on this system.
The Date Code for the block should be found on the cylinder block directly in front of the left hand cylinder head. Example; 478TA
"I have the tranny, its numbers are PBB7003M 260-10601. Can I replace it with a C-6? Is there a c-6 that fits or does a FE c-6 fit?"
PBB could be either a Multi-Drive (Merc-O-Matic) or a Twin-Turbo. I do not have pre-1960 FORD parts manuals so I.D. is just an educated guess and referencing from earlier LINC-MERC Service Bulletins.
The early MEL and FE have the same bellhousing mounting patterns so conceivably, an FE C6 could be made to fit. The MX and LX are excellent transmissions also.
