The LX has an even larger and heavier main case than the MX. It was LINC only until replaced by the C6 in 1966. It contained more clutch packages than the FX or MX.
The FX and MX were used by both FORD/MERC according to the strength of the transmission needed for whatever engine HP rating was used. There was some LX useage in early MEL (MERC) applications.
The FOM series went dual range in 1958 (CRUISE-O-MATIC) and went to modulator valve over manual linkage in 1961. Of course, you know the COM was redesigned and updated in 1968 and was designated the FMX (FORD/MERC/DUAL RANGE)(and it is possible to update earlier FOM/COM trans with FMX pieces).
There was also a two speed FOM (aluminum case) used from 59 to the introduction of the C4.
