Response to Need '64 Linc Cont 430 Help!

"My Questions as a Newbie:"

"1) I have heard (read) a lot about 3x2's 4x2's 8x2's and so forth but no one has really talked about pros or cons between them and what makes them different from the stock carb. (again newbie to this) Trying to figure out if I should stay with the stock carb or upgrade. (Horsepower-to-dollars ratio) If I have to pay $3000 for only a lousy 20 HP than that isn't an option nor does that make any sense to me. I'm willing to change or modify the hood if necessary."

The 3x2 option is the only one viable for the street. They are hard to find now and very expensive. The option will not fit under your hood without cutting it. The others are log manifolds. They are single plane and are designed for HI-RPM track useage. A setup would most likely drive you crazy on a heavy street car the first day. Stay with your present 4V CARTER.

"2) What does F/4/S mean?"

FORD FOUR SPEED TRANSMISSION-TOPLOADER...Very Desirable for street performance.

"3) What is pb blaster? How does it work better than WD-40?"

It is a rust penetrant, similir to LIQUID WRENCH.

"4) What type of spark plugs should I use? Brand/size?"

I only use MOTORCRAFT BSF-42

"5) What other ignition upgrades could I use besides an electronic ignition? I read somewhere about a magneto?"

A magneto generates it's own electricity. It is competition use only. Search the net for PERTRONIX II.

"6) What exactly is interchangeable with a Linc 430 as far as parts are concerned? I mean from starters all the way to lifters. I know that every newbie has asked this but their isn't really a list made yet....or is their?"

The 430 is mostly interchangeable from 58/60. In 1961, the LINC nose was lowered as well as the intake manifold and heads.

"7) Does anyone have any other ideas to upgrade the engine?"

Just careful and correct assembly, possibly a reground cam, hotter ignition and carburetor overhaul.
