I'm building my second 351 Cleveland, first drag-race intended motor. My first motor, has given me many miles of no trouble miles, spinning it to 5800 RPM. Lunati Solid, 290 adv; .515 lift, 228 @ .050. No oil mods, 2V heads. This current motor; I'm hoping to spin to 7000, cc'd 4V heads, pop-up pistons, and an un-decided cam yet. Something around 240@.050, and .570 lift (still looking for cam, taking advice as well). I bought this oil modification kit that routes oil from the rear of the block to the front. It basically takes oil from oil sender and routes it to the area around fuel pump, all done externally. Is this going to work? Is it necessary on a 7000 RPM motor? If so, any recomendations, or is this an ok way to do it (external kit). Any thoughts on the moroso style restrictor kits? thanks! I'm no Cleveland expert, just trying to learn, took a ride in a fast Cleveland 18 years ago that I still want to duplicate!!
I see the thread near this deals with the issue- sorry to bring it up again. So, morosso AND a booster line is recommended, correct? The modification kit I have (external) is the "booster line"? One otther thing here: Will the Comp Cam roller-tip "magnum" rocker (not a "full-roller") be ok with the restrictor kit hooked up? I thought I read somewhere that you need a fulll roller to utiilize the restrictor, but not the booster-line.
that is ok,just wait until i tell you to use a std oil pump(lol). i am not sure about the rollers, but if you leave out the 3/8 restrictor at number 5 main and get the correct edge orifice lifter they will meter the oil up the push rod(australian HO's and boss 351s had them so i have been told) but i am not sure.I myself would get some real roller rockers especially at 7000.
Std pump..?- I read something about that; pressure vs. volume or something...? Probably good insurance for the roller rockers- I'm going to buy some. 7000 will probably be the max. Cam and spring will dictate how far I go. I get my parts back from the machine shop Tuesday. I'm hoping to hit 425 Horsepower out of this Cleveland. You wrote earlier that you ran that f246, right? Tell me what you thought of it, if you have some time... Last, restrict all but the #5? Is that a pic of a maverick? hard to tell.. Is that what your racing out in L.A.? Thanks for late nite chat.
Step 1. Use the search function. This has been discussed to death. There are a couple different ways to deal with this. Don't forget a good pan and getting the oil back down to the pan from the valve covers.
you shuld use hv pump and a big 6 or7 quart pan. mate i am in Australia and that is a 1972 XA GT falcon it belongs to a mate if mine and we raced it at the street meetings between comp meatings when i turn spanners for other people. if you go to www.lamotorrepairs.com.au then select "engines"near the headder then go to the bottom of the page and go to drag vids pick number 2 and have a look
Hey there- thanks for the reply. I've never seen these cars before, although I knew they existed. After this reply, I'll be sure to check out your car. Are you a mechanic there in Australia? Mind if I ask where about you live as well...if you don't want to reply, i understand. I worked for 5 years or so, alongside a "Mick Droomgool", he was from Australia, somewhere... Any way, i hope to pick your brain once you get back online. Mick, unfotunantly for me, was swayed towards the chevy's.I doubt you know him, but he sure sticks out- big dude! Helluva a mechanic as well. Gsot both items you mention above for my build. Pan actually about 9 qts.its 9pm here, what time you got? Thanks again for info- it seems you Australian's have alot of Cleveland experience. All right, I'm going to take a look at your ride now..thakns for reply.
I had a street engine that I turned 7400 on OCCASSION..and it was for only a few seconds(stop lite racing) Then we finally got a local dragstrip(20 minutes from my house...amen) I started to have oiling problems from the get go...a lesser man would have given up, I had so many problems..lol(do a search, hint hint) Do yourself a favor and do them ALL. Mr Wydendorf sells a "do it yerself" lifter bore bushing kit...money WELL spent and you will eliminate the biggest problem...do the moroso kit and there's OTHER restrictor tricks...do the oil line(some say it does not work) but for the few bucks it costs, what the F@#K..bearing clearance and type of bearing and a host of other tricks.
You will get a few "naysayers" and other opinions(we love most of everyone on here..."GRIN") But I'm here to tell ya...I spent many hours and several thousand dollars before I got on this forum...Mr Wydendorf(wink), KidV, Joe, Dragboss(to name a few)and the other cast of "knowledable" Clevelandites...now(with the advice)I spin my 380 incher 8200 and the bearings look like the day I put them in(approx 120 passes) before...I'd get maybe 20 runs and I'd hurt no 2 or no 7 rod bearing...SAVE a good block and do the damn oiling tricks for the love of god!! Thankyou...you can stand at ease now...

Mr Weidendorf's lifter bore bushing kit?
December 28 2008, 3:15 PM
With the Mr Weidendorf lifter bore bushing kit with .040 oil passage holes, is this only for solid lifters or hydrolic flat tappet lifters also?
The oil mods with the restricor up in #1 and down in #4&5, are they just for solid lifters or can they be used also for hydrolic flat tappets also?
A lot is talked about this subject but not sure if it applies to only one or both.
Im not going to be reving over 6000rpm with mine and no track time, just street.
Thanks
Oiling problems increase by the amount of Rpms turned and the cam type and amount of lift. Roller lifters seem to create more problems than flat tappets. I usually use a .040 hole in solid roller and mechanical flat tappet cams for Drag race use but a hydralic roller or hydralic flat tappet will need more oil to operate correctly. I recommend using a Moroso oil restrictor kit, additional restrictor for the number one cam bearing in addition to using lifter bore bushings. I talked to a Comp Cams rep at Route 66 Dragway, and he said much of the problems with Roller lifters comes from the "Smile" machined into the lifter body. He also mentioned that Mopar and AMC racers also suffer the same fate. Bushings solve some of the problems that certain lifters create by allowing too much oil to pass by them. It is not the lifter to bore clearance that creates the problem as much as the location of under cuts to the lifter body, size and location of the oil holes and how far the lifter is up or down in the bore that allows oil to pass around them. It is impossible to know if you are going to have problems because of all the variables involved.

With the hydralic flat tappet you say that the .040 hole will need to be opened up bigger. What size should it be?
Also, with the Moroso Restrictor kit, will the extra or additional restrictor come with it or do you request the extra and what size should it be?
I tried to do a search on somebody doing the #1 restrictor and they had some pictures of what they did. I can't seem to find it, would anybody know where or what link that would be? Thanks again for your help
Dennis
what I do is get a 5/16 u.n.c grubscrew 5/16 or 3/8 long soften it by heat it to red hot with a torch then let it cool in air . get a 5/16 unc nut cut one side so when you clamp it it will squeeze the grub screw ,then drill the grub screw with a 0.040" or 1 mm drill bit then debur the grub screw.
I have to agree-this site seems full of knowledge on an engine that has not been produced(in the U.S. anyway)for about 35 years. I guess the 400 went on, but i've never owned one (yet!). Back to the topic at hand, thanks very much for the reply. My engine is due back from the machine shop Tuesday,so I'm ready (besides for my camshaft selection)to get busy assemblyin' and any other modifications needed- like ALL the oil mod's- sounds like I cant go wrong doing as many as I can. thank you for the input, and I'll take your advice on the search's.

Re: forum, searches, oil mods.

I do not have any feedback from guys that have run Hydralic lifters with the lifter bushings and I have not used hydralic lifters with bushings but a good place to start would be to drill a slightly larger hole in the bushing than what is in the lifter itself. Here is the link to the thread on installing the restrictor in the number one cam bearing;http://www.network54.com/Forum/119419/thread/1207690007/Cam+bearing+oil+mods
